Spring Into Fashion with New Eyeglass Frames

You don’t need to be a fashion expert to find eyeglass frames that look great on you. Our trained optical staff are here to help. Bissell Eyecare is excited to announce a new eyeglass frame line – Superdry from Tura.  These contemporary frames will be sure to turn heads and make a fashion statement with layered attention to detail and bold hues.

Eyeglasses can help create the image you want. Eyewear-styling experts recommend you start by considering the different aspects of your life. Ask yourself, “What are the different activities I participate in? What type of work do I do?” This speaks to why people need more than one pair of eyeglasses, just as they need more than one pair of shoes. Are you a fast-paced businessperson, an outdoor enthusiast, a busy mom, a retired senior, or a student?

To narrow down your choices, consider what eyewear experts suggest in terms of styling, color, material and size for various lifestyles.

STYLING TIPS

FACE SHAPE MATTERS:

  • Square Face: Eyeglasses that soften the angularity and sit high on the bridge of the nose look best on square faces. Oval or round eyeglasses will balance and add a thinner appearance to the angles of a square face.
  • Round Face: Eyeglass frames that are square or rectangular tend to be wider than a round face. This quality can enhance your face by making it appear slimmer and longer, adding balance to your round features.
  • Oval Face: Frames that suit an oval face have a strong bridge, are wider than the broadest part of the face, and are geometric in shape.
  • Diamond Face: Play up a narrow forehead and chin with eyeglass frames that sweep up or are wider than the cheekbones, such as cat eyeglasses and oval frames. These frames will accentuate your cheekbones and delicate features.
  • Heart-Shaped Face: Frames that balance the width of the forehead with the narrowness of the chin are ideal. Eyeglasses with low-set temples and bottom-heavy frame lines will add width to that narrower part of your face. Round eyeglasses or square eyeglasses with curved edges will help draw attention away from a broad, high forehead.

Consider Colors That Match Your Skin Tone

Skin tone sets the tone for high fashion frames. Select a shade closest to your skin tone:

Warm Skin Tone

If you have a yellow, bronze or golden cast to your skin, you have a warm complexion. Avoid contrasting colors such as pastels. The best frame colors for you are light tortoise, browns shades, gold or honey, beige, and olive green.

Cool Skin Tone

If your skin has pink or blue undertones, you have a cool complexion. Avoid colors that wash you out and instead reach for frames that are silver, black, dark tortoise, pink, purple, blue, mauve, and gray.

Choose Frames to Fit Your Lifestyle

There are eyeglass frames for every way of life! Think about the activities you will do while wearing your eyeglasses. If you are active, there are frames which can twist and bend without breaking. Need gaming glasses or computer glasses? Choose from a wide selection of stylish frames that enhance the gaming experience.

Show Your Personality

You can have a pair of glasses that showcase your fun-loving side on the weekends and a pair that emphasizes your get-down-to-business tone during the week. Tips For Choosing The Right Eyeglass Frames

Spring is a great time to update your eyeglass frames and Bissell Eye Care has a wide selection of designer eyewear for you to choose from. You don’t need to be a fashion expert to find eyeglass frames that look great on you but face shape, skin tone and lifestyle all play a role in selecting the best option for you.

WHAT SHAPE ARE YOU?

Your face shape will help determine which eyeglass styles will look best on you.

Start by pulling your hair away from your face and closely observing the overall shape and contours of your face and head.

Here are the basic shapes:

How to contour face. Six face shapes.

Oval

Balanced features and proportions make for an oval-shaped face. To keep this balance in check, you’ll want to choose eyeglass frames that are as wide as (or wider than) the broadest part of your face. Look for walnut-shaped rims that are neither too deep nor too narrow.

Frames to Avoid: Eyeglasses that are overly large and cover up more than half of your face will throw off the natural balance and symmetry of the oval face.

Heart-shaped

If you divide the face into thirds, with the top third being widest and the bottom narrowest, that’s a heart-shaped face. Reduce the apparent width at the top of the face with frames that are wider at the bottom. Thin, light-colored and rimless frames are good choices.

Frames to Avoid: Steer clear of any style or color of frames that draws attention to the forehead. This includes frames with decorative temples or embellished tops.

Oblong

A face that’s longer than it is wide with a long, straight cheek line is considered oblong. Go for frames that have more depth than width or those with decorative temples to shorten the face and add width.

Frames to Avoid: Especially narrow frames, or frames without a lot of depth, as these can elongate the shape of your face even more. You also want to stay away from oversized glasses or very round ones, as these can take away from the face’s natural symmetry.

Square

Square faces have a square jaw and broad forehead, with width and length being of equal size. To soften the angular look of squarish faces, pick narrow frames.

Frames to Avoid: Angular and boxy eyeglass frames will sharpen and draw attention to your angular features, making a square face appear bulky.

Diamond

Narrow at the forehead and jawline, diamond faces feature broad, high, and dramatic cheekbones. This is the rarest and often most prized face shape. Frames that have distinctive brow lines will highlight the eyes and soften the cheekbones. Also try oval or cat-eye shaped glasses.

Frames to Avoid: Boxy and narrow frames will accentuate the width of your cheeks, drawing attention to your narrow features rather than enhancing them.

Round

Curved lines with the width and length in the same proportions and no angles make for a round face. You’ll want a thinner and longer appearance, so try angular narrow eyeglass frames to lengthen the face and rectangular frames that are wider than they are deep.

Frames to Avoid: Rimless frames, round frames and small frames will accentuate the roundness, making your round face look even rounder.

Base-down triangle

The base-down triangle shape features a narrow forehead that widens at the cheek and chin areas. Add width and emphasize the narrow upper third of the face with frames that are heavily accented at the brow. Cat-eye-shaped frames are also ideal.

Frames to Avoid: Stay away from frames that have a lighter upper rim, or darker lower rim because these attributes accentuate the wider lower portion of the face and will bring attention to the widest lower jawline making base down triangular shaped faces even more wide in the lower portion of the face and jawline

SKIN TONE MATTERS.

Just as the shape of your face helps determine which frames look best, so does your skin tone. More important than hair color and more decisive than eye color, skin tone sets the tone for high fashion frames. Select a shade closest to your skin tone:

Are you warm-toned?   Colors well-suited to warm skin tones include dark red, honey, olive, and coral shades.

Are you cool-toned?  Colors that complement the cooler skin include blue-based reds, blues, greens, pinks, purples, blue-greens, and magentas.

Are you neutral-toned?  If your skin is neutral-toned, you can pull off essentially any color.

There are eyeglass frames for every way of life! Think about the activities you will do while wearing your eyeglasses. Bissell Eye Care carries a wide selection of stylish frames that can accessorize your business savvy with sensible style or durability for those with an active lifestyle.

Spring fashions are in and the staff at Bissell Eye Care are great at helping you choose the frames that look best on you. Stop in and check them out!

Designer Frames To Fit Your Lifestyle

Last month we talked about facial features when it comes to eyewear frame selection, but other factors play a role in selecting the best fit. Frame shape and size may also be dictated by bi-focal or trifocal lines that could be needed. Although they may be a top choice, those little rectangle frames may not be an option for patients who need trifocal lenses. Our optical specialists will be able to guide you as to the best style and shape not only for your facial shape, skin tone, and lifestyle; but they keep in mind the type of eye correction that is needed.

Skin Tone and Eye Frame Colors

Just as the shape of your face helps determine which frames look best, so does your skin tone. More important than hair color and more decisive than eye color, skin tone sets the tone for high fashion frames.

Warm Skin Tone – If you have a yellow, bronze, or golden cast to your skin, you have a warm complexion. You might want to stay away from contrasting colors such as pastels. White and black frames are not flattering either. Instead, the best frame colors for you are a light tortoise, browns shades, gold or honey, beige, and olive green.

Cool Skin Tone – If your skin has pink or blue undertones, you have a cool complexion. Avoid colors that wash you out and instead reach for frames that are silver, black, dark tortoise, pink, purple, blue, mauve, and gray.

Lifestyle

There are eyeglass frames for every way of life! Think about the activities you will do while wearing your eyeglasses. If you’re active, perhaps you want to choose frames that can twist and bend without breaking. Need computer or gaming glasses? Gamers can choose from a wide selection of stylish frames that enhance the gaming experience.

The frames you wear can say a lot about your personality. You can have a pair of glasses that showcase your fun-loving side on the weekends and a pair that emphasizes your get down to business tone during the week.

At Bissell Eye Care – we have you covered. We carry a vast selection of designer eyewear to fit your facial shape, skin tone, and lifestyle. Are you ready for a new look for spring? Give our office a call at 724-443-6767 or 724-226-0444 to schedule a visit and see what’s new.

Tips to Choosing Eyewear Frames

Bissell Eye Care prides itself on carrying unique brands of eyewear frames. Based on your face shape here are tips we take into account when helping our patients select just the right frame. Some patients struggle in their frame selection when it’s time for new glasses. Because we offer different frames that are often found in the big box stores, patients are sometimes overwhelmed with the selection. Personalized service and fit are what our staff specializes in which in turn helps our patients look their best in the frames they select.

We carry brands such as Scott Harris, Ray-Ban, Steve Madden, Ted Baker, State, Nike, Tiffany, and many more.

Face Shape

Round Face

  • If you have a round face… look for eyeglass frames that are square or rectangular. These shapes tend to be wider than a round face and can enhance your face by making it appear slimmer and longer, adding balance to your round features.
  • Avoid rimless frames and round frames. Small frames will accentuate the roundness, making your round face look even rounder.

Square Face

  • Eyeglasses for a square face soften the angularity and sit high on the bridge of the nose. It’s hip to be square. Oval or round eyeglasses will balance and add a thinner appearance to the angles of a square face. Think about rimless or semi-rimless frames.
  • Avoid angular and boxy eyeglass frames. They will sharpen and draw attention to your angular features, making a square face appear bulky.

Oval Face

  • If you have an oval face… frames that look best have a strong bridge, are wider than the broadest part of the face and are geometric in shape. Most styles will work with an oval face. Feel free to go bold with a funky color, texture, or frame shape. Square, trapezoid, tortoise, and rectangular – the possibilities are endless!
  • Avoid eyeglasses that are overlarge and cover up more than half of your face. This frame style will throw off the natural balance and symmetry of the oval face.

Diamond Face

  • Diamond face shapes play up a narrow forehead and chin with eyeglass frames that sweep up or are wider than the cheekbones, a rimless or oval frame with a strong brow line such as cat-eyeglasses and oval frames. These frames will accentuate your cheekbones and delicate features.
  • Avoid boxy and narrow frames that will accentuate the width of your cheeks, drawing attention to your narrow features rather than enhancing them.

Heart-Shaped Face

  • Heart-Shaped face look best with frames that balance the width of the forehead with the narrowness of the chin. Eyeglasses with low-set temples and bottom-heavy frame lines will add width to that narrower part of your face. Round eyeglasses or square eyeglasses with curved edges will help draw attention away from a broad, high forehead.
  • Avoid any style or color of frames that draw attention to the forehead. This includes frames with decorative temples or embellished tops.

When it comes to face shape, select eyeglasses that contrast from your facial contours and bring symmetry and balance to your prominent features. Spring into a new look and select frames that best fit your facial features. Schedule an appointment to see what’s new at Bissell Eye Care.

Mom with daughter in ophthalmology clinic

What to Expect at My Child’s First Eye Exam

American Optometric Association (AOA), states “infants should have their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age.” Did you know that Bissell Eye Care provides eye examinations for free to children as young as 6 months up to one year old? As children enter preschool around 3 years of age they should be rechecked and then again right before kindergarten. Experts say 5 -10 % of preschoolers and 25 % of school-aged children have vision problems.

During a child’s eye exam, we will perform three assessments, including a vision test, pupil test, and eye movement test. You’ll be asked about your family’s medical history, your child’s medical history, developmental observations and any vision problems that you might be observing with your child.

We encourage you to stay with your child through the entire examination. Infants and small children sit on a parent’s lap during the exam. Older children are encouraged to sit in the exam chair by themselves.
Eye drops are used to dilate the pupils, which gives the optometrists a better view of the structures inside the eye, such as the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels. The drops take about 30 to 45 minutes to become fully effective.

The Bissell Eye Care optometrists will carefully observe each eye as your child follows lights or toys. This gives a very good estimate of a child’s visual function. Children do not need to be able to talk or read to get an accurate eyeglass prescription. Children who talk but cannot read or count may be asked to identify pictures of common objects.

Once the dilation drops kick in, the doctor will use a retinoscope, a handheld polarized light, and lenses to read each of the eye’s red reflex. This allows the doctor to get an accurate eyeglasses prescription without feedback from the patient, allowing nonverbal or young children to get glasses.

These same eye drops also cause a temporary weakness of the eyes’ focusing muscles. This allows us to determine if your child has a focusing or refractive error that requires glasses. Refractive errors include:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia)
  • Farsightedness (hyperopia)
  • Distorted vision (astigmatism)

You may notice many preschools are starting to advertise registration for the 2020-2021 school year. Young children depend on their vision to learn tasks that will prepare them for school. During this time in their lives, they are developing the visually-guided eye-hand-body coordination, fine motor skills and visual perceptual abilities necessary to learn to read and write.

Early identification of a child’s vision problem is crucial because, if left untreated, some childhood vision problems can cause permanent vision loss. The AOA estimates one in four school-aged kids have undetected vision problems that critically impact their visual perceptual skills -better known – as the 3 R’s:

  • RECOGNITION — knowing the difference between letters like ‘b’ and ‘d’
  • COMPREHENSION — ‘picturing’ what’s happening in a story they’re reading
  • RETENTION – remembering and recalling details about what they’ve just read

Here are some tips for eye exams for young children:

Schedule the appointment during a time when your child is alert and happy taking into account napping and eating times.
A case history will be conducted to determine birth history, birth weight, medical issues, and any allergies
Be sure to note any delayed motor development, failure to maintain eye contact, poor eye tracking, frequent eye rubbing or blinking.

Prepare your child for success as they enter preschool and beyond. To schedule your child’s eye exam, give our offices a call at 724-443-6767 or 724-226-0444.

Money in Bag

MAXIMIZE YOUR FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNT (FSA) BENEFITS

Concept words FSA on wooden blocks on beautiful background from dollar bills.

The main purpose and benefit of contributing and using an FSA are any contributions made are pre-tax dollars. However, any qualified medical expenses paid for using the FSA are tax-free dollars. So you effectively pay no taxes on those expenses, by reducing your taxable income.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), can help you to spend less on your health care while experiencing the maximum tax benefit. However, you must use monies within the current calendar year to reap the rewards. By spending all of the money in your account before the year-end deadline you ensure you are getting the most bang for your buck.

FSAs are pre-tax monies that are placed in an account and are available for use only on approved medical expenses. They differ from a health savings account, HSA, in that the money contributed can only be used for that calendar year. In other words, the FSA accounts are “Use it or Lose it”. As the year quickly draws to a close the question becomes, have you used it?

Common eligible expenses include dentist and doctor visits, procedures, and co-pays, prescription drug costs or co-pays, laser eye surgery, eye exams, contacts, eyeglasses, and chiropractor visits.
If you have any medical conditions that require special equipment or treatment, these expenses are typically covered as well.

While there are no exceptions that allow that money to be directly paid back to you, there are more options than you might expect as to how to spend the extra money. IRS set a maximum FSA contribution limit in 2019 at $2,700 per qualified FSA. If you have monitored the amount spent during the year, you have an idea of what is left to spend down as December quickly approaches.

There are two cases where you can get a little extra time to spend that money.

  • A rollover option. This allows you to move up to $500 to next year’s balance.
  • Grace period. Because most plans fall on the calendar year, this option allows you to use the money for up to 2 ½ months past the end of the year. Why is this? Because during the first few months of the year your account has accrued little funds.

The IRS re-evaluated the FSA “Use it or Lose it” rule because many people were afraid of it (for good reason) and did not contribute at all. Now, the IRS is now allowing employers to implement a $500 carryover rule at their discretion.

Most FSA accounts come with a debit card and usually have one or the other of these two options but CANNOT have both. However, if you are required to submit a claim, be sure to watch the claim windows in which you are required to submit a claim.

How to spend FSA accounts?

If you have quite a bit left in your account, don’t despair. The list of things that you can spend the money on however is pretty large, leaving many surprised what they can purchase using their FSA account. To get a full listing of what you’re allowed to spend money by visiting an online FSA store. These stores only sell items that qualify approved purchases using your FSA account.

Some out-of-the-ordinary expenses you can pay for using your FSA account also include:

  • Chiropractor visits
  • Artificial teeth or limbs
  • Qualified service animals, such as a guide dog, including food and grooming costs
  • Travel that was required for medical treatment.

You may also use the FSA for expenses such as hearing, vision, and dental services even if you don’t have insurance for those services.

Keep track of your FSA account throughout the year and spending in moderation throughout the year will also help to reduce the scramble to use money that you have left as the year comes to an end. Despite the hassle of having to make sure all the money is spent, FSA accounts are a good way to avoid paying taxes on money that is used for medical expenses.

TIPS ON CHOOSING EYEWEAR FRAMES

In Optics Shop. Portrait of male client holding and wearing different spectacles, choosing and trying on new glasses at optical store. Man picking frame for vision correction, closeup.

Bissell Eye Care prides itself on carrying unique brands of eyewear. You won’t find many of our frames at some of the big box stores. What that means is you also won’t see yourself coming and going on the street with the same eyewear frames. Our staff are trained to help you choose the best frame for your face shape, skin tone, and style. Use the following tips to find the frames that work best for you.

Your face shape will help you determine which frames enhance your look.

Round Face

  • If you have a round face, look for eyeglass frames that are square or rectangular. These shapes tend to be wider than a round face and can enhance your face by making it appear slimmer and longer, adding balance to your round features.
  • Avoid rimless frames, round frames. Small frames will accentuate the roundness, making your round face look even rounder.

Oval Face

  • If you have an oval face, frames that look best have a strong bridge, are wider than the broadest part of the face and are geometric in shape.
  • Avoid eyeglasses that are overlarge and cover up more than half of your face. This frame style will throw off the natural balance and symmetry of the oval face.

Square Face

  • Eyeglasses for a square face soften the angularity and sit high on the bridge of the nose. Oval or round eyeglasses will balance and add a thinner appearance to the angles of a square face.
  • Avoid angular and boxy eyeglass frames. They will sharpen and draw attention to your angular features, making a square face appear bulky.

Diamond Face

  • Diamond face shapes play up a narrow forehead and chin with eyeglass frames what sweep up or are wider than the cheekbones, such as cat-eye glasses and oval frames. These frames will accentuate your cheekbones and delicate features.
  • Avoid boxy and narrow frames that will accentuate the width of your cheeks, drawing attention to your narrow features rather than enhancing them.

Heart-Shaped Face

  • Heart-Shaped face looks the best with frames that balance the width of the forehead with the narrowness of the chin. Eyeglasses with low-set temples and bottom heavy frame lines will add width to that narrower part of your face.

Skin Tone and Eye Frame Colors

Just as the shape of your face helps determine which frames look best, so does your skin tone. More important than hair color and more decisive than eye color, skin tone sets the tone for high fashion frames. Select a shade closest to your skin tone:

  • Warm Skin Tone: If you have a yellow, bronze or golden cast to your skin, you have a warm complexion. Stay away from contrasting colors such as pastels. White and black frames are not flattering either. Instead, the best frame colors for you are a light tortoise, brown shades, gold or honey, beige, and olive green.
  • Cool Skin Tone: If your skin has pink or blue undertones, you have a cool complexion. Avoid colors that wash you out and instead reach for frames that are silver, black, dark tortoise, pink, purple, blue, mauve and gray.

Lifestyle Matters

There are eyeglass frames for every way of life! Think about the activities you will do while wearing your eyeglasses. If you’re active, perhaps you want to choose frames which can twist and bend without breaking. Need gaming glasses? Gamers can choose from a wide selection of stylish frames that enhance the gaming experience. When impressing the big wigs at the office, you can accessorize your business savvy with sensible style.

The frames you wear can say a lot about your personality. You can have a pair of glasses that showcase your fun-loving side on the weekends and a pair that emphasizes your get down to business tone during the week.

At Bissell Eye Care – we have you covered. We carry a vast selection of designer eyewear to fit your facial shape, skin tone, and life style.

GRADY GETS GLASSES

first-pair-of-glassesGrady Gets Glasses, a new program offered by Bissell Eye Care provides a book written by a retired school teacher and local author, Dede Rittman, to young children who receive their first pair of glasses. It talks about the importance of being able to see better and how glasses will help.

For parents of young children, learning your child needs glasses may be a bit overwhelming at first, but you’ll be amazed at the difference in their ability to see clearly and function better. All of the doctors at Bissell Eye Care have young children, so we are accustomed to working with kids of all ages. You may recall a while back, Dr. Long shared her own story about her son’s vision deficit.

Here are some things to consider when choosing your child’s frames. There are more and more options for glasses for young kids, but keep in mind you need to find frames that fit small faces. Different brands offer warranties, for both the frames and the lenses, so be sure to ask. There are three criteria when shopping for frames… FIT, FUNCTION, and FASHION in that order.

Fit is crucial. Glasses need to fit your child today and not size up for future growth. Glasses that fit well stay put, encouraging your child to look through the appropriate part of the lens. They are more comfortable, which encourages compliance, and honestly, they look more attractive. In small children, bigger is definitely not better when it comes to frames. Bigger frames mean bigger lenses that can cause the frames to slide down their nose. Frames that fit well don’t move even while laying down or rough play.

Function. Frame types vary, but the three basic types are wire, flexible, and plastic. The fit is a huge factor in function because glasses that fit well function well. Age and activity of the child go hand in hand when choosing a frame. If you have an infant or an active toddler that needs glasses, you will likely want something flexible and as close to indestructible as you can get, like Miraflex. An older child active in sports may also need a second pair of glasses that are sports goggles. A child who requires an exact bifocal line may do much better wearing a wire frame with nose pads because it gives you the best adjustability.

Fashion is the last on to consider. Glasses that fit and function well for your child are the most important thing, but they will still look adorable in properly fit glasses. Having concerns about your child’s appearance is expected. Be sure not to get caught up in the fashion of the frames if it is to the detriment of fit and function.
